The kitchen garden

Client Goals: Edible Garden and Lawn Repair

This family has enjoyed gardening for many years, planting fruit trees and growing veggies together.

Now “empty- nesters” with few helpers and sore backs, they asked THE SHE SHED to renovate their old edible garden bed, rebuild the back dry-stone wall and plant the upper bed with bright blooming shrubs and perennials, and repair the lawn.

This old Dartmouth property has many lovely cottage features including a garden shed, several old stone features and a charming rustic vibe.

We installed rough hewn hemlock raised beds (18” tall to facilitate access), river stone border and a 6x6 hemlock beam surround to strengthen the design, retain the stone and facilitate access up an incline to the garden bed.

The lawn area was excavated, fresh soil added, high phosphorus seed starter fertilizer spread and high quality Kentucky blue grass sod installed.

Goutweed from neighbouring properties was also a concern for this property. While not captured in the photos, we also installed a protective weed barrier along the right side of the property before planting tall ornamental grasses.

This was a three day project that transformed this rough and tumble garden into a much improved edible and ornamental garden.
