      <image:title>Home - Before - Rear Left Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>For three seasons the homeowner had diligently over-seeded the area using the proper methods and seeds but was unable to get grass to grow. Given the effort put into the lawn, we looked deeper at the ground below the sod and determined that poor site preparation was the primary reason for failure. Turf grass needs just four things to flourish: sunlight, air, water and nutrients. Grass obtains three of these four essential elements from the soil. After this home was built and prior to landscaping, the site had not been cleared of rocks, stone and tree stumps. There was far less than the optimal soil depth of 4-6 inches of soil for the sod to grow healthy roots. In the middle of the yard, a large tree had been cut to the soil level. The 32 inch diameter surface was topped with a grass sod without any soil base for the roots to become established in. On the right side of the image, goutweed can be seen coming under the fence from the neighbors’ yard. Goutweed is an invasive species that left unattended will spread quickly, out-compete other plants and create a monoculture. It spreads underground using rhizomes, tracks the roots of other plants and comes to the surface where it uses sunlight to strengthen and produce white blooms that spread seeds and further enable it to spread. Found on Halifax’s invasive species list, goutweed is very difficult to control and it is one of the most common garden challenges we encounter on the Halifax peninsula.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Before - Front Center Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>Once upon a time this was a nice garden bed… …but limited time and ability had reduced the homeowners capacity to care for it for a number of years. An overabundance of perennial spiderwort from multiple splitting and random maple saplings made it unattractive while crowding out pretty cone flower and a lovely magnolia shrub. The bed had not been edged or mulched for some time allowing grass to grow into it and weeds to outnumber ornamental nursery plants.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Before - Left Garden</image:title>
<image:caption>Our hearts skip a beat when we see mature gardens like this. We know that many years ago someone had a vision for a beautiful garden. But now….overgrown shrubs crowd a mossy path, huge variegated leaf and white bloom hosta beg to be split, weed filled beds have collapsing brick borders and no one has been able to access the shed for years. Call us crazy. We love to bring order and beauty to the ramshackle disorder of old gardens.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Dining Area</image:title>
<image:caption>The designers at Hammock by Thornbloom recommended a lovely dining suite with brown table, wicker-look chairs and a soft blue-green umbrella that mirrored the glass railing enclosure. Floor to ceiling glass walls allowed for an expansive view of the terrace and skyline from inside the suite. Inside, Melanie Orr of Interiors by Melanie had used the same soft hue in the living area furnishings. We loved the consistent and subtle use of blue-green and neutral shades and recommended classic matte-white containers for the garden. Clean and bright, these planters offer flexibility for a range of four-season planting designs over time.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Right Garden - Before</image:title>
<image:caption>The right side of the property had mature deciduous trees that while lovely, were casting heavy shade on the lawn making it patchy and hard to grow. Worse yet, invasive and fast-growing goutweed from neighboring properties had all but taken over the yard. The client wanted a hedge along the front of the property and dogwood shrubs had been chosen some years earlier. They were not the ideal choice for this location for a number of reasons; their mature size was too large which resulted in heavy pruning to keep the sidewalk passable. Over time, they had become misshapen and unattractive.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Home - Front Garden - Before</image:title>
<image:caption>This Andrew Cobb inspired home was built some 30 years ago. The new owner had the original drawings for the garden…a rare opportunity to see the original vision. After a review of the drawings and a walk about the garden, it was clear that much had changed. The woodland environment had grown. Taller trees created a more shady garden than existed 30 years earlier. Some plantings were missing and some shrubs were misshapen due to poor pruning over time.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Rugosa rose. I have a love-hate relationship with the rugosa rose hedge in my yard. I love their bright pink blooms and large red rosehips…and they remind me of my grandmother’s garden in Apple River, Nova Scotia. It’s a mature, rugged hedge that is easy to care for. I don’t mind pruning to keep it sized to my smaller yard, but it sends out annoying runners. My grandmother had the perfect place for them: full sun and room to spread out. I can still smell them. - sun to part shade, 4-8’x4-6</image:caption>

<image:caption>Hydrangea macrophylla ‘Wedding Gown’. This dwarf, lacecap hydrangea with double white blooms brightens shady areas of the garden. In this client’s garden, it’s placed in part sun. I have two placed in shade under the canopy of a pollarded willow…the one in more sun performs better than the one in heavy shade. This hydrangea can be used flexibly; it’s refined enough for a bridal bouquet and stunning in a cottage garden. - part sun/shade, 2.5x3-4’</image:caption>

Planted here in a patchwork, they line a path into my garden. My sheltered Bedford garden is a location where we like to test less commonly seen varieties such as this. It was planted about 4 years ago, began to bloom in 2020 and was impressive this year.
